Ryoma Sakamoto

Ryoma Sakamoto was an iconic figure in late Edo and early Meiji era Japan. Born January 3, 1836 and died December 10, 1867, he was an influential samurai, politician and businessman.

Sakamoto Ryoma is best known for his role in the Meiji Restoration, a movement that overthrew the shogunal regime and restored the power of the Japanese emperor. He played a crucial role in the abolition of the feudal system and the modernization of Japan. His innovative ideas on politics and diplomacy, as well as his desire to modernize Japan, had a significant influence on the country's history.

He was also involved in commercial activities, particularly in the field of shipping, which allowed him to build networks and alliances that were beneficial to his political activities.

Sakamoto Ryoma is often revered as a national hero in Japan for his role in the history of the Meiji Restoration and for his progressive vision that helped transform Japan into a modern nation.

Originally, the family crest of the Sakamoto Ryoma family was "Maruni Tanamon" (a circle with a rice field pattern). However, when they founded a new house using the crest "Kumiai-kaku ni Kikyo" halfway, they adopted this family crest. Although the reason is unknown, the “Kikyo mon” coat of arms is considered a versatile coat of arms, bringing auspiciousness and military victory, and also protecting against evil spirits.
